Wintertime is the perfect time to cozy up with a good book. The best way to experience this is by creating a cozy corner to read in. Here is your guide, from lighting to blankets, to crafting the ultimate Winter reading nook.

By Jayne Turner – Staff Writer

Location

Choose a quiet corner with minimal distractions. Preferably by a window, for natural light and fresh air. Windows also provide a peek into the outdoors, so you can enjoy the soft sounds of rain as you read.

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, this is a great place for a cozy winter reading sesh. If not, a space heater will work just as well to keep you warm.

Comfy Seating

A cushy chair, couch, or beanbag is essential for a full day of reading. Avoid hard chairs or anything too small to spread out on. They make chairs just for reading. They’re like personal-sized couches. This one from West Elm has great ratings.

As for beanbags, the Lovasac is an elevated option. You’ll love climbing up this supersized bean bag for a cozy day of reading. These huge beanbag chairs are another great, more affordable option. They fit two people, or just one very comfy person.

Look for thick cushions, back support, and a place to put your feet up. They can be costly, but totally worth it.

Lighting

Turn off those harsh overhead lights and opt for lamps instead! Place a lamp right by your reading chair to avoid eye strain. If your nook is set up for it, these wall sconces are beautiful and provide direct lighting. Any soft, but sufficient lighting will do! Even stringing up fairy lights will add a whimsical touch.

If the lighting in your room isn’t ideal, a reading light that can be attached to your book is super helpful, especially for dark winter days.

Blankets

The right blankets are essential to keep warm and cozy while you read. What type of blanket you prefer is personal! Whether you like chunky knit, sweater knit, or ultra soft, there are great options online and in stores.

You’ll also want a comfy lounge set or pajamas to wear! There are tons of lounge sets available online, such as these from Cozy Earth and these mix-and-match sets from Aerie.

I personally like an oversized tee shirt or sweater to stay cozy, but a matching set will make you feel chic and festive!

Extras

Personal touches like framed photos, trinkets, and a place to set your books will make it so that you can stay in your book nook all day. Coffee lover? Make sure you have a small desk nearby to set down your mug.

Plants add life to a room. They also improve air quality, so you’ll be breathing easy. Choose a low-maintenance indoor plant, like a pothos or a snake plant!

Consider a candle or scent diffuser for added ambiance. Candles provide ambient lighting, aromatherapy, and relaxation to your space. Essential oil diffusers are safer for long-term use. They even act as an air purifier!

There is nothing better than being comfy and cozy inside while winter rages outside. Now you know how to make the perfect book nook to get through your winter TBR list. Happy reading!
